What to Watch for in Immigration - Week of July 21, 2014

Deporting children.   This story is so depressing, it is difficult to talk about, think about, or write about. Thankfully, others have a better capacity for dealing with ultra-depressing topics.  There is really not much more that can be added to stories recognizing this is a refugee crisis , religious leaders calling for a more compassionate response and reports on our long history of accepting unaccompanied migrant children. While nations do have the right to enforce their borders and the law must be obeyed, it must be remembered that these are children.  If our politicians put half as much effort into addressing the issue as opposed to scoring political points in an election year, this problem would have a solution.  Democrats, Republicans and the President should all be ashamed of themselves. Immigration is back in the news.   If there is a benefit to the humanitarian crisis on the border, it is that immigration is back in the national discourse.  W...

What to Watch for in Immigration - Week of June 16, 2014

Did Cantor's defeat in the primary expose a GOP divide over immigration?   According to RNC Chair Reince Preibus, the answer is a resounding no .  Preibus obviously didn't let Senator Lindsey Graham know there isn't a divide, as the pro-immigration reform senator from South Carolina took to Face the Nation on Sunday, asking Republicans not to be "delusional" about immigration reform.  Graham was not alone.  Senator Jeff Sessions , Speaker of the House John Boehner , the Wall Street Journal and  Mr. Cantor himself all expressed contrary views on the subject. Former border patrol Agents claim immigration crisis is "contrived."   Speaking of delusional, former officers of Customs & Border Protection claimed the current waive of children fleeing Central America for the United States made the trip with "the encouragement, aid and assistance of the United States government."  Apparently, the transfer of children from Central America "h...

What to Watch for in Immigration - Week of April 7, 2014

Yes he can, on immigration.   Can President Obama do more on immigration than he is currently doing? He says no.  Others say yes.  This is the subject of a New York Times article sure to make headlines and fuel debates this week.  This editorial skewers President Obama over his "cold-blooded" strategy of increased enforcement, citing 5,000 children who have ended up in foster care thanks to deportations.  Will the New York Times have success where countless activists looking to increase pressure on the president have failed?  Don't count on it. Immigration reform still the top issue.   Over the weekend a bevy of articles touched on immigration reform and activism in support of such.  On Saturday, demonstrators across the country rallied in support of immigration reform.  The protests generated headlines and analysis from news sources asking the question: Is Obama the " Deporter-in-Chief ?"  Jeb Bush also made headlines by referring t...

What to Watch for in Immigration - Week of March 24, 2014

Seeking the Pope's Blessing.   Unsatisfied with the progress towards comprehensive immigration reform in Washington, a group of young activists are setting off to Rome in hopes of meeting with the Pope.  What do they plan to do if they meet him?  Let him know they're "representing millions of children...and...that people are separating families because right now is a time when kids really need their parents."  From the mouths of babes.... What exactly does Obama mean by humane deportations?   How do you make something that is inherently inhumane more humane?  This is the question posed by activists this week after the President made a promise to make removals more humane.  Sounds like someone has some explaining to do/ Could immigration reform bolster national defense?   Some seem to think so.  At the very least, they argue, keeping students who excel in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) is essential to a national securi...

What to Watch for in Immigration - Week of March 17, 2014

President Obama vows to review deportations.   Finally bowing to public outcry over record deportations and the inhumane treatment of immigrants in enforcement, the president finally  responded with..... more talk , but still no action.  President Obama announced that he has requested a review of his administration's enforcement policies to see if enforcement can be done "more humanely."  In other words, he's not halting deportations, he just wants to make sure they're done with a smile.  I'm sorry, but isn't the president the "chief" executive?  Isn't he supposed to be in charge of his administration?  If he has to request a review in order to understand the impact his enforcement policies are having on thousands of families he promised to help over six years ago, he's more out of touch than the GOP accuse of him of being.  Speaking of which... The GOP continues to resist immigration push.   So...basically the same thing we tell you ...
